Volunteering for Girl Scouts: Making the Difference
When Karen Jones, owner of KCJ Creative, a graphic arts design firm in Reno, Nevada, was asked to take over her daughter’s Girl Scout troop, number 107, she didn’t think she had the time or the skills to pull it off. Now, she has been volunteering for five years, and she believes that she has been rewarded over and above what she ever expected. “They look to me for advice and leadership,” she says. “I didn’t think I could pull it off, but, even if you aren’t trained, you pick it up quick.” The most rewarding aspect of being a Girl Scout volunteer for Karen is that she gets insight into the lives of the girls. She believes that being a leader opened up dialogue with her daughter and her daughter’s friends that might not have been there otherwise. The girls benefit just as much. They have an adult they can go to who will be there for them through difficult adolescent years. Also, they learn valuable skills, develop long-term friendships, and have access to many wonderful opportunities.
Currently, Karen’s troop is raising money for a trip to Washington D.C. by selling Girl Scout cookies throughout the month of March. Don’t forget to pick up some Girl Scout cookies at your local retail outlets!

Lighting the Way for Preventing Crystal Meth Addiction
On March 1, the Girl Scouts of Sierra Nevada presented an interactive town hall meeting on the dangers and horrific effects of methamphetamine addiction on girls in our community. Dawn Gibbons, First Lady of Nevada and former Girl Scout, was the keynote speaker. She spoke about calling attention to this immediate threat and spreading the important message that no one should ever think of trying Meth, not even once. Her speech was followed by a special panel discussion and question and answer session. The panel consisted of six prominent community leaders: Linda L. Reed, CEO, Girl Scouts of Sierra Nevada; Kevin Windisch, MD; Mike Haley, Washoe County Sheriff; Katherine Loudon, Safe and Drug Free Schools; Vicki Warner-Huggins, School Counselor; and Sophie Metraux, Join Together Northern Nevada. They offered their perspectives on preventing methamphetamine use, spotting the problem, and understanding the effects and consequences of use.
Nevada is number one in the country for meth abuse. Young girls are especially vulnerable to the allure of this extremely hazardous drug. Meth’s ability to generate unhealthy weight loss and act as an appetite suppressant has enticed many young women to experiment. Unlike any other drug, it is estimated that 50 percent of meth users are women, and adolescent girls make up 70 percent of admissions for methamphetamine abuse (according to the National Center on Substance Abuse and Child Welfare statistics). While meth releases dopamine into the user’s system causing intense feelings of euphoria, a consequence of long term meth usage is the destruction of the brain’s dopamine receptors. This means the destruction of the user’s ability to feel pleasure. Other side effects include paranoia, insomnia, anxiety, aggression, hallucinations, sores on the face and body, tooth decay, liver damage, convulsions, stroke, and death.
The town hall meeting was a great start in opening communications in our community about meth abuse in order to fight this terrible problem. Education about the effects of this drug was the main method of prevention discussed by the panel.
